Narratives

  • Narratives can be used as the grounds for explaining current attitudes and opinions.
  • A narrative ending can communicate the speaker's purpose in telling the story
    • "Yesterday, what I did I have spoken."
    • "The wanbel we did I have spoke."
    • "We're wondering if these guys are the same."
    • "The work I did this morning I have spoken and it is done."
  • Quotes of characters in the story are prominent and can be used to express the speaker's opinion, and thus be an insight to the purpose of the text.

Hortatory

  • Exhortations show speaker purpose.
  • Future tense verbs describing desired actions shows speaker purpose.
