Step-goal

Last updated: Dec. 11, 2025

Definition

The events are reported as successive but the earlier ones are purposefully leading to the later one.

or

"A sequence of preparatory actions (the steps) that the speaker presents as intentionally leading up to and culminating in a final, goal-oriented action."

English examples

  • He took off his jacket, rolled up his sleeves and went to work.

Kovol examples

  • Mena obob yab ina utut.
"He got the food went and gave it to mother."

Kovol description

As in English, the causal overlay is implicit and unmarked. Kovol also seems to do it implicitly, using the same pattern as for Sequential.

There are possibly constraints

  • Presumably, the verbs will always be chained as they belong together.
  • The final verb would communicate the goal and thus be limited to only some verbs.

Degree of confidence

Medium

Neither Steve nor Philip noticed anything significant in DA for step-goal. Purpose may be implied to a sequence of events based on an implicit assumption that earlier events lead to the final verb.
