Simultaneous

Last updated: Dec. 11, 2025

Definition

Two events are reported as occurring at the same time. It is irrelevant whether the two events began and ended simultaneously. The fact that they occurred at the same time is what counts.

English examples

  • Nero fiddled while Rome burned.
  • Steve played video games while Gerdine did all the work.

Kovol examples

  • Hogowt heleb igitasi, Ruth wohat.
"(while) they were hiding, Ruth saw them."

Kovol description

Kovol seems to take the Tok Pisin pattern of using "i stap" to communicate simultaneously. "Em I slip I stap na mi kam."

In Kovol, this would take the form of "to be" igisinim as a medial verb followed by the simultaneous clause.

Degree of confidence

Low

  • Only a single example from DA
  • Could it be communicated by "mehamong neleb yab yabi mohis tebege"?
  • In the past, Steve has thought that there might be an -a suffix on the verb. In DA he suggested mongoloba and lumotoba. Both were in fast, hard to transcribe speech and the pattern has not been confirmed. Attempts to produce it have failed to communicate. It has been dismissed for the moment.
