Communication relations

The communication categories provided were taken from our Discourse Analysis template. The definitions and English examples given in the DA apps glossary have been given. When these definitions were not helpful enough examples and extra definitions have been pulled from Mildred Larson's "Meaning based translation" textbook.

The Kovol examples have been pulled from:

  • Steve and Philip's DA write-ups.
  • Various notes on elicited Kovol sentences.

Is DA the best source?

As Steve put this together, he came to the opinion that DA is not always the best source for figuring out these relationships. Our DA texts were, at times, very complicated. The relationship examples have at times been between propositional clusters or paragraphs. It's been too hard at times to see the patterns.

Eliciting more isolated sentences can make the patterns easier to see. Then we can confirm seeing them in DA. Steve thinks the team should spend a little time eliciting examples of these relationships rather than only pulling them from DA.

Our current knowledge level

  • We have focused more on how these relationships are done and know little about why they are used.
